The Bookend Metaphor

The Bookend Metaphor

The bookend has become a role model of support for me. It sits right next to the books, invites them to lean in, and doesn’t push or pull away. There are gaps in the row of books representing losses of different kinds, and the roses huddle close, shedding an empathetic tear (petal) as they provide support. Some books tip and lean, but they are held up by the companionship of the bookend and the empty glass jar that reassuringly holds space. The glass is clear and open, showing that it is willing to witness another’s experience and is there to help hold it. When I felt feeble during tattered chapters in my story, I was upheld by the steady companionship of loved ones who held space for my experiences. Like a bookend, they were present with me, strengthened me, and upheld me.
